Hi there. I have a question regarding some issues with exporting. I am trying to export a Quicktime video, with the X264Encoder, with Premiere and Adobe Media Encoder. I am using footage from a Canon 6D and 7D.
I noticed quite a difference in the color and tonality of my video from the program window in Premiere. I have spent many hours researching this issue and stumbled upon the Gamma Shift. However, I read that most people experiencing this issue were using Final Cut Pro. I decided to do my research and follow some steps to try and conquer this problem on my own.
Aside from changing settings in their Quicktime Players, many people were resorting to using the X264Encoder as a solution to the problem. I have been using X264Encoder for quite some time. I followed some instructions to go into the codec settings of the X264Encoder and check the box that reads “Add gamma 2.2 (SD/HD content)” which was supposedly the solution to this gamma shift many have been experiencing. I kept opening this settings window to make sure that the change had been applied - and it was. This did not affect my export and left me with the same undesirable appearance.
Perhaps I have not been as observant to the shift before, but this specific export seemed to really show a difference in color and tonality. I also incorporated a graphic, exported from AE, in my PP project that had 90% opacity. The AE graphic looked just the way I had anticipated when imported into my PP project. So, there wasn’t an issue in the AE render.
In my final export, there was not only the shift in color and tonality, but the graphic I had included was quite low in saturation (or washed out), which I am guessing has to do with the blacks not being true, as shown in the overall image. Again... the gamma shift?
I should also mention that I always view my videos with VLC Player, as it shows a more accurate preview of such details. Even when uploaded to Vimeo, these issues were present.
I have restarted my computer and all programs. I even moved my project over to another machine and tried to export from there. The same issues arose.
For a quick solution, I exported my video with the H.264 format as a .mp4. The color was much more accurate with this export. However, I would like to troubleshoot the issue with the Quicktime format, rather than resort to .mp4 or making tonal and color adjustments in PP that would compensate for the shift...which is obviously a bad idea to begin with.
I am using the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite CC 2014
The specs of my machine are:
Mac Pro
Processor: 2 x 2.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Memory: 20 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB
Software: OS X 10.8.5
Here is a screen capture of what I am experiencing...
And here is a screen shot to show my export settings:
I hope that is enough information to get to the bottom of this problem!
I appreciate all help provided!
