Key Frames and Key Frame Distance

$

0

I posted this is the Premiere forum two months ago, but no response.

I’m trying to understand where Key Frames are positioned, but the info I have found on the web is unclear. Here is Adobe’s explanation from the Adobe Media Encoder PDF:

Explanation 1

Key Frames are complete video frames (or images) that are inserted at consistent intervals in a video clip. The frames between the Key Frames contain information on changes that occurs between Key Krames.

By default, AME automatically determines the key frame interval (Key Frame Distance) to use based on the frame rate of the video clip.

If your footage has a lot of scene changes or rapidly moving motion or animation, then the overall image quality may benefit from a lower Key Frame Distance. A smaller key frame distance corresponds to a larger output file.

In another Adobe document it states that a Key Frame Distance is the:

Explanation 2

Number of frames after which the codec will create a key frame when exporting video.

Somewhere else it states (re Key Frame Distance):

Explanation 3

This sets the maximum # of frames between key frames. If this # of frames without a keyframe occurs, the compressor will insert a keyframe regardless of whether the scene has changed.

There are differences between the explanations:

  1. the first says that Key Frames are created at a constant separation;
  2. the second implies that Key Frames may not be at a constant separation (because a new Key Frame will be created a certain number of frames after the previous Key Frame, but doesn’t say anything about the Key Frame before that one);
  3. the last explanation is quite clear (but at variance with the first): The Key Frame distance is the maximum number of frames allowed between Key Frames.

My interest in Key Frame Distance is because I have noticed a very slight, brief shimmering at one-second intervals in my slide shows exported from Premiere in h.264 (Blu-ray), 23.976 fps, 20-30 Mbps bit rate, 2-pass, Key Frame Distance unticked (with “23” appearing dimmed). It’s a very subtle effect, not always visible. I assume the shimmering is when a new Key Frame has been inserted during a still. Whether or not that really is the cause, I'd still like to know more about Key Frames. Most of my Premiere work is with stills, with the occasional video clip from a Lumix GH3 (1920 x 1080, 23.976 fps, AVCHD) thrown in. The stills have mainly simple dissolve transitions.

Q1: I assume the clips out of my GH3 have, as per Explanation 1, a constant distance between Key Frames. If such a clip is cropped inside Premiere at a frame that is not a Key Frame, does Premiere, when exporting, insert a new Key Frame at the crop point, using information contained in the original clip to create the image at that particular frame?

Q2: In general, where two unrelated video clips abut (but not at Key Frames), what does Premiere do about Key Frames? Add one at the last frame of the first clip, and at the first frame of the second clip? Then apply the Key Frame Distance parameter to ensure that within each clip there are a suitable number of Key Frames?

Q3: For stills, does Premiere insert Key Frames at the Key Frame Distance? Or is it clever enough to know that: “Hey, this is a still. No Key Frames are needed.”

Q4: Where are Key Frames created for a still that is dissolving? Assume a Key Frame Distance much greater than the dissolve time. If I was designing Key Frame inserting software, I would create a Key Frame at the start of the dissolve, one in the centre, another at the end of the dissolve, and then no more until the next clip.

Q5: Can Premiere (or AME or After Effects) tell me where Key Frames are located? Can I move them?

Can we get Adobe Media Encoder to shutdown the  pc after encoding done?

Is there someone who has script that can monitor the exe and then shutdown pc after encoding done?

Audio Randomly Dropping Out Of Imported Files

$

I'm using Adobe Media Encoder build 9.2.0.26 on a 2015 iMac running El Capitan with 32 GB of Memory and a 4 GHz Intel Core i7 processor.

I frequently import longer musical performances (up to and over an hour). I never had this issue until recently, but upon importing the concerts, the audio is dropping out at random points. This isn't a Premiere issue, because the audio drops out when viewing the imported file in Quicktime as well.

Waveform.jpg

You can see in the picture above that all five channels of the 5.1 surround just stop mid way through the concert. There's no consistency to the time when each concert drops out. The above video has the audio drop out at just under 32 minutes. Other concerts have dropped out at 30 minutes, 53 minutes, 15 minutes, and 24 minutes. This problem does not seem to occur with shorter files.

Here's is the encoder information from the log:

- Source File: /Volumes/CAM_MEM/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM/00008.MTS

- Output File: /Volumes/Goliath/PremiereFiles/Concerts/SP161003_OldLineStatesmen.mov

- Preset Used: Custom

- Video: 1920x1080 (1.0), 29.97 fps, Upper, Quality 90, H.264, 01:05:46:00

- Audio: Uncompressed, 48000 Hz, 5.1 (L, C, R, Ls, Rs, LFE), 16 bit

- Bitrate: Target 10 Mbps, Max 10 Mbps

- Encoding Time: 00:54:55

10/05/2016 07:54:30 PM : File Successfully Encoded

Does anyone have any insight as to why this is occurring and how to fix it?

Thanks in advance!

Chris

Media Encoder pausing when I hit spacebar in Premiere

I'm trying to encode videos in Media Encoder while editing other videos in Premiere. Media Encoder keeps pausing for no apparent reason. I've done some investigating, and it seems when I hit the spacebar in Premiere to pause or resume playback, it's also pausing the encoding in Media Encoder. This seems like a pretty self-defeating bug to me.

I tried to solve this problem by deleting the spacebar keyboard shortcut in Media Encoder, but it's still happening. Is there a fix for this?

Export video from After Effects for Web Banner as HTML5

I have an 10 seconds video done in After Effects CC 2015 with 300 x 600px and need to work as a Web Banner.

We need to supply it as HTML5 and the Media Guide needs it with maximum 40Kb.

I have read many tutorials but since FLV and SWF are not in After Effects or Adobe Media Encoder, I don't know how the process would be.

Please help us.

Thank you,

Adobe Media Encoder wont support HEVC all of the sudden

So I been digging the CC 2015 Media Programs now since launch, but SpeedGrade has had issues and now suddenly Media Encoder has issues for me as well, it used to support HEVC/H.265 just fine a few weeks ago but now it wont work no more after I updated it updated to the latest version, Premiere Pro is in the latest version and supports the HEVC codec just fine but Media Encoder refuses to support it, I also lack the OP1 MXF wrapper with the XAVC and AVC codecs.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on? I tried uninstall and reinstall the program but it keeps installing the newest version, so I tried getting the standalone version of it to use the very first release of the Media Encoder and it still wont work. What is going on here?

The program gives me the following message everytime I try to export a HEVC sourced project. This file requires HEVC codec

Adobe Media Encoder Support of WEBM Files?

Hi - I need to know if the Adobe Media Encoder supports WebM files, and if it can convert a WebM file (of at least 250mb) to a standard video file, such as mp4 or Quicktime.

Thank you!

Adobe Media Encoder Fail - need help please

I keep getting a failed error when trying to use Adobe Media Encoder.

I open up my premiere project and select the comp I want.  I switch the format to Quicktime, select h.264 from preset.  Hit the start button and I get the failed sound/icon.

2 questions:

1. My comp is 1920x1080 but when I go in it automatically has it as 720... why is it not recognizing the comp size?

2. Is there a way to fix this error?  It seems to export occassionally to my C drive (which is not raid) but it fails to my F drive (Raid 10).  But usually if I export as a wmv or something smaller it exports fine to F.

No audio when using 2017 Media Encoder

Hi,

I'm having issues with the 2017 version of Media Encoder.

To start, I exported my files from Adobe Premiere CC 2017 version. I have no problems with audio. Sound is there with the file(s). Everything looks good.

Then, when I use the media encoder to change to another format, I get no audio at all. All of my clips from the new ME has no audio.

I have cleaned the media cache from both Premiere and ME. I also re-installed Media Encoder 2017. So far, nothing has worked. Still no audio on files.

Everything was fine with previous version. Any suggestions?

Adobe Media Encoder: Audio won't export with video

I am trying to convert an AVCHD video for viewing on my iPad 3. I use Adobe Media Encoder and select the iPad 2 settings (1920x1080) and it exports the video perfect, but no audio. I have "Export Audio" checked off. I tried it with 5 other settings and it just wont include the audio. Any ideas?

Using Encoder to convert a DVD to a single (MP4) file

$

I currently have Adobe Media Encoder CC. I have a number of family DVDs that I would like to convert each to a single digital file for online storage. All these DVDs have menus. If possible I like the menu part to also be converted -- I know it will not be interactive but its presence will show what all is there.

I know that I can convert individual VOB files to MP4.

Question 1: Is it possible to convert all video VTS*.VOB files (preferably with the menu) into a single MP4?

Question 2: If the above is not possible, is there an option in AME to merge the resulting MP4 files into a single file?

Question 3: If the above approach is not optimal, what is the best way to convert DVD files into a single digital file (with or without the menu part).

Many thanks in advance!

Can't publish videos to youtube via media encoder. Error 403 quotaExceeded

Getting this message/ error while trying to upload to youtube after encoding like I normally do. I'm getting it every time, and I have searched everywhere for a solution, and I have come up with nothing. Nothing has changed on my end, and everything appears to be up to date. Would absolutely love a timely response, and something other than a game of 20 questions. This is the error log, nothing has changed on my end, and the internet is saying it's an API issue, but absolutely nothing regarding Adobe specifically is coming up.

I repeat. Creative cloud AND apps are up to date. This started happening randomly, first error happened on 08/08/2016 07:35:08 PM. (I was sick and didn't bother trying to upload until now which explains the gap in time). I have tried everything from a 15 second video, to a 40 minute video, logging out and back in multiple times, etc etc. The usual trouble shooting.

I trust the support team will deal with this in a timely manner, as the publish feature is kind of one of the major selling points of Premiere Pro.

I will NOT answer a series of 20 questions, or play forum tag for a week. I just want a swift solution to this error, or I will simply consider dropping the products due to the mass of errors I have had to deal with via the direct publishing feature.

The error:

Media Encoder Export to h.264 Keeps Erroring

I am using the YouTube 1080p 30fps preset and twice now I have had an export of the same project fail. The error log states:

The result is a small file of 24 bytes, so the video doesn't even get created. I have exported this same project to DVD and ProRes with no issue, so I have no idea what the problem is.
